National Black United Fund of New Jersey (NBUFNJ)

Annual Report  2004

National Black United Fund of New Jersey, an affiliate of the National Black United Fund is a charitable network engaged in strategic community renewal through networking and partnerships of community based organizations in communities of color. Through the promotion and expansion of philanthropy, we endeavor to assist in providing stable, ongoing support to nonprofit organizations engaged in the social, cultural and economic revitalization of Black and minority communities throughout the state

The NBUFNJ drive for community development and self-sufficiency is a cooperative effort founded in grass root communities. Our goal is to bring new philanthropic dollars and other resources into local communities.

The NBUFNJ network has grown through the tireless efforts of many individuals who have given their time and commitment to make prosperity in Black and minority communities an attainable reality.

Our strength lies in organizing a diverse base of community activists, civic and fraternal organizations, businesses, employees, and religious leaders, along with the collective power of hundreds of volunteer hours spent each year to make our communities stronger.  We are active and involved, making a difference in the lives of our affiliate and federation members and their communities.

Black United Fund of New Jersey (NBUFNJ) was instrumental in reaching more than 207 organizations in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area.  During the spring and fall of 2004, monthly workshops and roundtable discussions were conducted providing information on issues of importance to non-profit organizations and technical assistance.

The steady growth of our workshops has helped to provide consistent cultivation and necessary individualized assistance to community organizations.  The NBUFNJ technical assistance and educational programs has led to the formation of new organizations to meet various needs such as: housing and job opportunities for youth who age out of the foster care system, job readiness programs, etc.

The workshops were directed by NBUF staff and presenters from various non-profit and
for profit organizations:

Volunteerism: directed by Girl Scout Council of West Essex and Hudson Counties

Marketing: directed by NBUF/C staff, Christina Bookhart

Startup Issues: presented by Keith DaCosta of Strategic Healthcare Solutions

Resource Development and Non Profit Administration: Henry Rawls, Stephanie Burroughs.

Budgets and Business Plans: Michael Husbands of Husbands & Associates, LLC, NBUF staff Roy Maynard

During the year we held many individual sessions with organizations for technical assistance in completing 501(c)(3) applications, incorporating, budgets, managerial, administrative, planning and other issues.

A major event for NBUFNJ was the May conference held at NJIT, which was supported by Fleet Bank and

Black United Fund of New York.  Conference topics covered many of the basics of non-profit operations for the 43 organizations that attended.  The subjects that were covered were: fundraising, development, 501(c)(3) applications, loans, boards and board development, issues for the minority organization, developing successful business plans, budgets, etc. Organizations attended from throughout New Jersey and the five boroughs of New York City.

Other activities in 2004 included educational workshops, and speaking engagements at numerous events and conferences throughout NJ and NY. On behalf of NBUFNJ and NBUF, we presented to the National Association of Black Catholic Administrators as a keynote speaker, addressing the topic of faith based non-profit activities and funding initiatives.

NBUFNJ participated in the organizing and follow up activities of the Hip Hop Political Convention in Newark. Over 5,000 participants attended the convention and produced a policy and issues platform and attended workshops focusing on local organizing and political empowerment to effect social change.

To our donors, volunteers, friends and all who have demonstrated their commitment to the goals and vision of the Black United Fund, we offer a heartfelt “thank you”.
Our capacity to effect change is be greater because of you

“ Working together the ants ate the elephant.” Together we can build better communities.
